provided for testing purposes only. While close to the final stable
release, this snapshot is not intended for production servers.
There has been a substantial amount
of development since the 3.0.21 series of stable releases.
We would like to ask the Samba community for help in testing
these changes as we work towards the next significant production
upgrade Samba 3.0 release. Please read the specific changes in the
       Release Notes.

The Samba 3.0.23rc1

Samba Helps Enable Exchange Alternative

PostPath has created a
      protocol-compatible drop-in alternative to Exchange.

It provides granular backup and restore, on or offsite
redundancy, 5X Exchange performance, and AJAX web access.

The best part is that the company
      leveraged Samba
and other Open Source software to do it.

Groklaw Interview with FSFE President Georg Greve

Groklaw has an
      interview
with FSFE President Georg Greve. The interview was conducted
in Luxembourg during the MS EU appeal trial. The interview
relates to Samba creator Andrew Tridgell's testimony at the trial.

We were extremely happy to have Andrew Tridgell over to speak on
behalf of the Free Software Foundation Europe and the Samba Team
which you know have been working together throughout the entire
case. We had Jeremy Allison over for the interim measures hearing
and so this time it was, you know, the founder of the Samba project.
Andrew Tridgell is, you know, uniquely skilled to talk about these
issues; also, he is a very good speaker and, you know, intimately
knowledgeable in the whole area, so could easily rebut anything that
Microsoft's experts were bringing up in terms of fog and smoke grenades
and put a lot of clarity, I believe, into the case.

Thanks to Sean Daly for the link to his interview.

Summer of Code '06 Student Applications

Google is doing its
Summer of Code program again this year. Samba is proud to be
involved again as a mentor organization, so if you're a student and
have some time on your hands this summer, consider signing up. From
      the Summer of Code site:

The SoC is our program to introduce students to the world of Open Source
software development. Last year of the 8744 applicants, 419 students were
accepted into the program and more than 80% of them succeeded, which means
they received the full stipend of $4500.

Today, 1 May 2006, is the day Google has planned to start accepting
applications from students. For a list of potential projects in Samba
      development, see our
      Summer of Code '06 project
      page.
